Imani Winds to hold Chamber Music Festival at Julliard

The Imani Winds Chamber Music Festival is an intense summer institute (27 July though 5 August 2011) that features concerts, masterclasses, ensemble instruction, and career building workshops. Now in its second season, the festival is hosted by Imani Winds and housed at the Julliard School in New York City. This summer’s festival offers two exciting programs: The Fellowship Program for woodwinds, horn players, and pianists who wish to immerse themselves in high caliber wind quintet/sextet performance, and the General Chamber Music Program that welcomes strings, winds, and pianists for intensive training within mixed ensembles.
The idea for a summer institute was the brainchild of Imani flutiest and founder Valerie Coleman. “No-one could have imagined us doing something like this” says the group’s horn player, Jeff Scott. But after the success of the first season which attracted enough participants to form ten woodwind quintets; “this year we are expanding, because we anticipate even more students, and instead of just one week, this year we are having a ten day session. We are also including piano, strings, and brass this year. We actually changed the name from Chamber Institute to Music Festival.” During the10 days of the festival, musicians are mentored and immersed into all aspects of chamber music: honing skills in artistry, communication, and performance”.
“We have a lot of fun working with young musicians,” says Scott, as do all of the visiting artists and clinicians who include Dr. Paul Cohen, saxophone, Pedro Diaz, oboe, Paquito D’Rivera, clarinet & saxophone, David Jolley, horn, David Krakauer, clarinet, Judith Mendenhall & Paula Robison, flute, and Evelyn Ulex, piano.
Although the festival’s core curriculum focuses on chamber music & solo musicianship, participants will also be involved in discussions and workshops focusing on communication, entrepreneurship & networking, composing & arranging, education & outreach training, as well as yoga, Alexander Technique and breathing.
On-line registration for the 2011 Imani Winds Chamber Music Festival closes on the 1st of May. For further information please click on the links below.
